The following systems illustrate the breadth and depth of E-Bod Technologies' engineering, several of which are deployed on operational locomotives in the field.
E-Bod Locomotive Control System (EBCS)
A complete, Siemens-based locomotive control system, designed from the ground up.
• Built around a Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200 PLC with E-Bod's own EBIO isolated I/O modules, communicating over Ethernet via low-latency UDP.
• Full electrical isolation between the locomotive's 74 V circuits and the 24 V control system, using railway-approved DC-DC conversion for clean, protected power.
• Advanced functionality including traction and dynamic-brake control, wheel-slip detection, motor cut-outs, ground-relay handling and GPS speed fail-over for overspeed protection.
• SIMATIC KTP touch HMI with multi-language (English/French) driver and maintenance screens, live diagnostics and on-screen wiring diagrams.
• Interoperable with other manufacturers' control systems for multi-unit operation; configurable remotely and supported over the air.
LocoGuard — Locomotive Telemetry & Monitoring
Real-time, remote monitoring of locomotive health and location.
• Captures motor currents, brake pressures, fuel level, throttle position and GPS location in real time and streams it via MQTT to secure servers.
• Detects critical conditions — motor stalls, ground-relay trips, excessive wheel-slip and sustained over-current — and raises instant alerts.
• Browser-based SCADA dashboards present live data, alarms and historical trends from anywhere with an internet connection.
• Redundant data logging across the on-board industrial PC, cloud storage and central servers, so operational records are never lost.
• Notifications via Telegram, with automated daily e-mail summaries of each locomotive's activity.
Note: LocoGuard is the intellectual property of Grindrod Rail Consultancy Services. E-Bod Technologies maintains and supports the system; all LocoGuard sales are handled through Grindrod Rail Consultancy Services.
EBSS — E-Bod SlowSpeed System
Precision low-speed control for locomotives, retrofittable alongside existing systems.
• Adds accurate slow-speed capability (selectable between 0.4 and 1 km/h) using closed-loop PID control of traction-motor current.
• Works in combination with the existing on-board control system, leaving the locomotive's safety functions fully intact.
• Siemens S7-1200 PLC and KTP700 HMI with current and voltage transducers, a custom Multi-IO module and SCR firing control.
• Multi-unit capable, sharing the desired motor current across consist locomotives to balance load and avoid oscillation.
GPS Speedo
A drop-in GPS speed source for locomotives.
• Replaces a failed or unreliable axle generator with GPS-derived speed for both driver indication and the event recorder.
• Self-contained module powered from the existing supply — a quick, low-intrusion installation typically completed in under 30 minutes.
• Engineered as a packaged E-Bod product with its own control board, suited to shunting and main-line operation.
Locomotive Voltage Regulator (EBVR)
Solid-state auxiliary-generator regulation and battery charging for locomotives.
• Regulates the auxiliary generator’s field to hold a stable charging voltage across the locomotive’s battery and 74 V auxiliary supply.
• Closed-loop PID control on a Siemens SIMATIC S7-1200, replacing legacy carbon-pile and electromechanical regulators with precise, repeatable solid-state regulation.
• Direct terminals for auxiliary-generator output, generator field and battery, for straightforward retrofit to existing locomotive wiring.
• Protects the battery and connected electronics from over- and under-charging, holding regulation steady across varying engine speed and electrical load.
• Locally manufactured and fully supportable, engineered to the same railway-grade standard as the rest of the E-Bod locomotive range.
ProAmp Industrial Monitoring Range
Custom-built monitoring and alarm electronics for industrial sites.
• 32-Input GSM Logger: a 31-channel monitored-input data logger with on-board flash storage for over a million events, configurable alarm thresholds and SMS alerting over GSM.
• 20-Zone Annunciator: a 20-zone alarm and annunciation panel with wire-break and fault detection, integrated battery charger (lead-acid and LiFePO4), siren/strobe/bell outputs and a mimic-panel interface.
• Demonstrates E-Bod's capacity to take a monitoring requirement from PCB design through to a finished, field-ready industrial product.
